Experience Movement

The Black Panthers of California in Action

Movement involves a change of mind; the shifting of long held belief; and tectonic alterations to the ‘facts’ surrounding historical events. This event will re-examine one of the most controversial groups of the 1960s and 1970s civil rights movement: the militant black power group known as the Black Panther Party (BPP). This event features surviving local black and brown power group members with historians and a Black Lives Matter organizer for a panel discussion on the Panther’s role in the black liberation struggle. In addition to the discussion, the project will involve a Film screening and an exhibit of BPP materials held in the SDSU Library’s Special Collections, examining various historical perspectives and how those changed with the disclosure of counter-intelligence actions taken by the FBI to discredit the organization.
