12:30 pm:  Like a man on earth

(Come un uomo sulla terra, 2008, 60', Amharic, Italian, and English with English subtitles) directed by Andrea Segre and Dagmawi Yimer.

(Synopsis: The film follows Dag's story. Law student in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), who decided to leave his country because of the strong political repression. In Winter 2005 he crossed the desert between Sudan and Libya. However in Libya he had to endure not only the violence of those smugglers managing the journey towards the Mediterranean, but also and most of all the abuses and violence of the Libyan police, responsible of blanket arrests and inhuman deportations.  Survived to the Libyan trap, Dag succeeded in arriving in Italy by sea, in Rome, where he started to attend the school of Italian language of Asinitas Onlus, meeting place for many African immigrants.  For more information about the film visit: Zalab.

2:00 pm:  Closed Sea

(Mare chiuso, 2012, 60', Amharic, Tigrinya, Somali with English subtitles) directed by Andrea Segre in collaboration with Stefano Liberti.

(Synopsis: Since March 2011, after the outbreak of the Libyan War, many African migrants and refugees escaped from the country. While a part of this flow has found shelter in refugee camps at the border with Tunisia, others managed to reach Italian coasts by boat. Many of them had been previously pushed back by Italy as a result of an agreement signed by Berlusconi and Gaddafi in 2008. For more information about the film visit: Zalab.

About the directors:

Andrea Segre is an Italian filmmaker. His recent feature films Shun Li and the Poet (Io sono Li, 2011) and Early Snow (La prima neve, 2013) have received international critical acclaim and have won numerous prizes. In recent years he has made documentaries on the passage of migrants from Africa to Europe through the Mediterranean, in the face of European detention and repatriation practices. Like a Man on Earth (which he codirected with Dagmawi Yimer), South of Lampedusa and Closed Sea (both of which he codirected with Stefano Liberti) belong to this period.

Dagmawi Yimer is an Ethiopian-born, Italy-based director specializing in documentary filmmaking. Having survived a year-long journey through the Sahara, numerous stints in Libya’s notorious transit camps, and a perilous sea-voyage to Italy, Yimer began filming the experiences and testimonies of other migrants who had undertaken similarly harrowing journeys from Africa to Europe. His first major documentary was Like a Man on Earth, undertaken with Andrea Segre.

Stefano Liberti is an Italian journalist, writer and screenwriter. He collaborated
with Andrea Segre to the documentary short A sud di Lampedusa (South of
Lampedusa
, 2006) and was awarded the Indro Montanelli Prize in 2009 for his
book A sud di Lampedusa. He co-directed Closed Sea with Andrea Segre in
2012. For more information about the documentary South of Lampedusa please
